The New Mexico Rider

I've got to get out and ride some dirt this Saturday, 3/13.  Hoping to be able to do a day trip from Santa Fe to Magdalena and back.

Slab through ABQ

West on I40

South Hwy 6

South Alamo Rd

South Buricito Rd (New to me)

Lunch in Magdalena

North NF 354 (Riley Rd) (Rode it only once)

Explore a little along Riley Rd

Eventually hit the slab back home

I know there are a couple water crossings and I'm curious if anyone has any good insight into how passable they will be this time of year with stuff starting to melt and some of the mountain rains.  I've been across the Riley water crossing once with pretty low water in the fall.  I've never been down Buricito Rd and it looks like there's a crossing there over the same wash as the Riley crossing.

I'll be sporting my new HD Helmet cam for the first time to get some practice footage.

Anyone want to come along on this one?

WT, I may be interested (weather permitting). The road you are talking about from highway 6 down through the Alamo Reservation is easy. The weather we are having could turn the road to slick mud.

What time of day are you thinking of heading through ABQ toward hwy 6?

Weather is supposed to be dry from now through til Sunday. Should be enough time to let the snot dry up in most places. If the recent snow and rain makes the Buricito water crossing to hairy, it's easy enough to change plans and go where the dirt takes us and avoid the Riley crossing as well.

Plan is to leave Santa Fe as early AM as I can muster. It's a pretty ambitious day from Santa Fe with a total distance of ~350 miles round trip from my house with about 215 of that slab. The slab is not such a big deal for me on the R1200GSA, but it will be a long day. In my estimation that adds up to a good 7-8 hours in the saddle for me. I can either do that or sit on my couch for 7-8 hours...he he...

I'm okay with leaving Santa Fe around 8am...I'll have room on my tanker to wear cold weather gear and strip it off and store it later in the day if it gets warm. That would put me at the Big I at about 9am and the exit of I-40 to Hwy 6 by 9:30am.

Name a meeting place (gas station) close to I-25 or I-40 and let me know what a good time is. This trip wouldn't be much fun without some company, so I'll do what I can to accommodate timing.

How about meeting at the Route 66 Casino gas station west of Albuquerque (I40 at the Rio Puerco) at 9:00?

Route 66 Casino gas station at 9:00am works for me. Sounds like you're in, eh Joey? Excellent! Depart there no later than 9:15am?
