The New Mexico Rider

Has anyone had experience on this (approximately 8-14 mile) jaunt on # 289 up to Highway 4?  If so, I would be interested in hearing of your experience.  Thank you!

Nice road, pretty ride. Came through there this summer-fall. There was a little traffic up by 4, and came by 2 other vehicles as I was coming down. A few places can sneak up on you if you are not paying attention and have oncoming traffic. Hope this helps.

Frequently used road--from my point of view an easy ride. Will find both 4x4 and motorcyles. During winter or summer rains it can be more difficult.

Thank you Akasy and Roger for your responses. Sounds like a neat ride and I will give it a go this summer.

Just looked at your profile and note a 2008 BMW R1200 GS--not my choice of bike for the Jemez but to each his own. Post over in Advrider in the rockies forum and ask WildTurkey about the roads you are interested in--he rides one of those Beemer things.

Thanks, Akasy! It's tough, but I'll just have to suffer on the GS.

You shouldn't have any problems once things dry up a bit in late spring. I've done most of the main forest roads on a v-strom so your GS will be fine. You should swing through FR376 down to the Gilman tunnels while you are in the area.

Thanks, Wendell, for the additional comments and the FR376-Gillman Tunnel suggestion. I've been up-down #289 several times over the years, but never on a bike. I think it will be less challenging than several of the other like-trips that I've taken.

Don't let Sy scare you away from this ride on a R1200GSA!
It's a great road for a GS going northbound versus southbound.

The one thing I will tell you is...CALL ME BEFORE YOU GO SO I CAN RIDE IT WITH YOU!!!!

I did this ride solo last September...took a few pics in the bottom section and then ended up chasing a KTM 950 the rest of the way up to the mesa. I then split off and took the Dome Lookout Rd.
Great short ride!

Along the Dome Lookout road off of 289...definitely more technical at the top...

Thanks for the comments and the great pictures! I plan to take this ride sometime this summer, then on up to the base of Pedernal.

Self edit, just found Cerro Pedernal, which I believe you are referring to.
